A Federal Firearms License (FFL) is required to engage in the business of manufacturing, importing, or dealing in firearms. Here's how to get one.
FFL License Types
- Type 01 — Dealer/Gunsmith ($200 for 3 years)
- Type 02 — Pawnbroker ($200 for 3 years)
- Type 03 — Collector of Curios & Relics ($30 for 3 years)
- Type 06 — Manufacturer of Ammunition ($30 for 3 years)
- Type 07 — Manufacturer of Firearms ($150 for 3 years)
- Type 08 — Importer of Firearms ($150 for 3 years)
Requirements
To qualify for an FFL, you must:
- Be at least 21 years old (18 for Type 03 and 06)
- Be a US citizen or legal permanent resident
- Not be prohibited from possessing firearms
- Have a premises for conducting business
- Comply with state and local laws and ordinances
The Application Process
Step 1: Complete ATF Form 7
Download ATF Form 7 (Application for Federal Firearms License) from atf.gov.
Step 2: Submit Application
Mail the completed form with the appropriate fee and passport photos.
Step 3: Background Check
The ATF will run a thorough background check including criminal, mental health, and financial records.
Step 4: Interview & Inspection
An ATF Industry Operations Inspector (IOI) will visit your premises to verify compliance and conduct an in-person interview.
Step 5: Receive Your License
If approved, you'll receive your FFL in approximately 60 days from submission.
