Caliber debate: .308 Win for whitetail
I know this is beaten to death but I'm torn. Buddy swears by .300 BLK but I've always shot .308 Win. For elk at distance does it really matter?
Convince me — or not. Just want honest opinions.

Your buddy's crazy suggesting .300 BLK for elk lol. That's a short range cartridge, fine for hogs maybe but elk at distance? Stick with your .308 Win, it's proven and has way better ballistics past 200 yards. I'm more of a bird guy but I've seen plenty of elk taken cleanly with .308. If it ain't broke don't fix it.
.308 all day for elk. I use it on everything from coyotes to the occasional feral hog and it just works. Your buddy might be thinking subsonic .300 BLK which is cool and all but completely wrong application for elk hunting. The .308's external ballistics and energy retention at distance can't be beat. Plus ammo's available everywhere if you're hunting out of state.
Up here in Alaska .308 Win is standard for a reason. Taken multiple moose with it and it hits hard at distance. Your buddy's .300 BLK suggestion makes no sense for elk unless you're planning on shots under 150 yards max. Even then, .308 has better penetration for those quartering shots you sometimes get with elk. I'd stick with what you know and shoot well.
Good looking out for sharing this deal. Just ordered one.
Solid post. I've been thinking about the same thing lately. My Sig P365X has been my go-to but I'm always looking at other options.
Not sure I agree but I respect the opinion. For me the FN 509 has been rock solid for 10 months now.

+1 on this. My buddy had the same issue and switching to Dark Star Gear fixed it for him.
