Single mom — need home defense advice
I'm a single mom with 1 kids and I've never owned a gun. Had a scary situation recently — neighbor got robbed. I want something for home defense but I'm overwhelmed.
Where do I even start? Budget is around $599.

I had the opposite experience honestly. But everyone's different I guess.
I feel you girl! Was in the same boat last year after my ex moved out. Ended up with a Glock 19 for $550. Simple, reliable, tons of training videos online. Take Sarah's advice about training - made all the difference for me. Also consider a shotgun... easier to hit with under stress imo.
Glock 19 all day. Dead reliable, easy to maintain, plenty of capacity. Should be able to find one in your budget. But like everyone else said - get training first. Maybe rent a few different guns at the range to see what feels good in your hands. And don't forget about a good gun safe/lock box for when the kid's around.
Good on you for taking responsibility for your family's safety. For a first gun I'd suggest something simple - Glock 17/19, M&P9, maybe a revolver if you want really simple. Most important thing is training and practice. Find a good instructor, not just someone at the gun store. Your life might depend on it.
First thing - take a basic pistol class. NRA First Steps or similar. You need to be comfortable and confident with whatever you choose. For $599 I'd look at Glock 19, S&W M&P9, or Sig P320 Compact. All reliable, easy to learn on. But honestly, training is more important than the gun itself. Happy to answer any other questions!
