Thread a barrel for a suppressor — who's done it?
Want to thread my AR-15 barrel for a SilencerCo Omega 36M. LGS wants $150. Barrel is government profile.
Any risks?

Gov profile barrel should thread fine for 1/2x28. Just make sure they use a thread protector when you're not running the can. I'd also consider getting a muzzle device that's compatible with your suppressor - like the SilencerCo ASR mount. Way faster to attach/detach than direct thread.
$150 is about right for threading if they're doing it properly. Main risk is if they mess up the concentricity - you'll get baffle strikes. Make sure your LGS has experience with suppressor threading, not just general gunsmithing. I had my BCM upper done at a place that specializes in NFA work and it's been perfect with my Omega 36M.
Had my competition guns threaded by a local smith who does a lot of PCC work. Key is making sure they indicate the barrel properly before cutting - concentricity is everything. $150 is reasonable if they're doing it right. Cheap threading jobs will cause problems down the road.
Anyone else run into this? I thought I was the only one.
This is the content I come here for. Thanks OP.
If it's a quality barrel I'd say go for it. BA and Aero barrels thread well in my experience. Just make sure your LGS has a lathe and isn't trying to do it with a hand tap... seen that disaster before. Might be worth calling SilencerCo first to confirm thread pitch - some of their newer cans use different threads than the standard 1/2x28.
I run a similar setup and it's been flawless. Good choice.
Thanks for sharing. Been lurking for a while and this finally made me want to comment.
