What to Expect at Your First Gun Show
Gun shows are one of the best ways to browse a wide selection of firearms, ammunition, and accessories all in one place. If you've never been to one, here's what to expect.
Before You Go
- Bring cash — Many vendors prefer cash, and ATM lines can be long.
- Bring valid ID — You'll need government-issued photo ID for any firearm purchase.
- Check local laws — Know your state's rules on private sales and background checks.
- Wear comfortable shoes — You'll be walking concrete floors for hours.
At the Show
Most gun shows charge a small admission fee ($5–$15). Inside, you'll find rows of tables with vendors selling:
- New and used firearms (handguns, rifles, shotguns)
- Ammunition and reloading supplies
- Holsters, optics, and accessories
- Knives, tactical gear, and survival equipment
- Collectibles and militaria
Making a Purchase
If you buy from a Federal Firearms Licensee (FFL), you'll fill out ATF Form 4473 and undergo a background check — just like at a gun store. Some states require background checks for private sales too.
Tips for First-Timers
- Walk the entire show once before buying — compare prices.
- Ask questions — vendors are usually happy to talk.
- Inspect used firearms carefully before purchasing.
- Keep your receipt and any documentation.
