What to Expect at Your First Gun Show

What to Expect at Your First Gun Show

Gun shows are one of the best ways to browse a wide selection of firearms, ammunition, and accessories all in one place. If you've never been to one, here's what to expect.

Before You Go

  • Bring cash — Many vendors prefer cash, and ATM lines can be long.
  • Bring valid ID — You'll need government-issued photo ID for any firearm purchase.
  • Check local laws — Know your state's rules on private sales and background checks.
  • Wear comfortable shoes — You'll be walking concrete floors for hours.

At the Show

Most gun shows charge a small admission fee ($5–$15). Inside, you'll find rows of tables with vendors selling:

  • New and used firearms (handguns, rifles, shotguns)
  • Ammunition and reloading supplies
  • Holsters, optics, and accessories
  • Knives, tactical gear, and survival equipment
  • Collectibles and militaria

Making a Purchase

If you buy from a Federal Firearms Licensee (FFL), you'll fill out ATF Form 4473 and undergo a background check — just like at a gun store. Some states require background checks for private sales too.

Tips for First-Timers

  1. Walk the entire show once before buying — compare prices.
  2. Ask questions — vendors are usually happy to talk.
  3. Inspect used firearms carefully before purchasing.
  4. Keep your receipt and any documentation.
