Understanding the ATF FFL Database

Understanding the ATF FFL Database

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) maintains a public database of all Federal Firearms Licensees (FFLs) in the United States. Here's what you need to know.

What Is an FFL?

A Federal Firearms License is issued by the ATF to individuals and businesses that engage in the manufacture, importation, or sale of firearms. There are several license types:

  • Type 01 — Dealer in Firearms (most common gun shops)
  • Type 02 — Pawnbroker dealing in firearms
  • Type 07 — Manufacturer of Firearms
  • Type 08 — Importer of Firearms

The Public Database

The ATF publishes a downloadable list of all active FFLs, updated monthly. This data includes:

  • Business name and trade name
  • License type and expiration
  • Physical address
  • Phone number (if provided)
